The Yamaha XT660z Tenere isn’t just my favourite adventure bike but a bike that has a world wide reputation for being one of the most reliable, go anywhere machines ever built. Coming from a long line of Tenere bikes it’s pedigree speaks for itself and thus it has to be on my list of bikes to consider.

Unfortunately I sold my Tenere (pictured) before this trip became a reality and I’ve been kicking myself ever since!

There are a good number of these machines on the market for sale however, many have been abused and so finding a good one is really difficult. It took me 12 months of searching to find this lovely example in Desert Sand colour and so finding another one that has been looked after isn’t going to be easy.

Royal Enfield Himalayan

The Royal Enfield Himalayan is a fairly new bike to the adventure scene and as yet fairly unproven.

The reason I am considering this bike is mainly due to it’s low seat height. Not being blessed in the leg department, getting my feet down flat for off-roading is an important consideration.

The Himalayan is a 411cc adventure bike weighing in at around 200KG, so it’s not light by any means and probably one of the heaviest 400cc bikes around.

Reliability is a big concern with this bike as it’s still fairly new to the adventure scene and as yet unproven.

If you own a Himalayan please do leave me a comment below detailing your experience so far as it would be great to hear from people who are actually riding the bike.

I’m hoping to get one for a day to see how it performs, just need to find a dealer willing to let me try one for a day, any offers?
